In 1965, Jagjit Singh went to mumbai without informing his family and started his struggle in the world of music. In Mumbai, Jagjit Singh met Chitra Dutta, a Bengali woman. Both fell in love and then in the year 1969 both of them got married. They also had a son name vivek.
Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh used to concur together. By the year 1980, Jagjit Singh had become a ghazal king. Along with the private album, Jagjit also sang many ghazals in films including 'Prem Geet', 'Earth', 'Jism', 'You Bin', 'Jogger's Park'.
Jagjit Singh's son Vivek died in a road accident at the age of 18. Because of this, Jagjit and his wife started living very unhappy. Jagjit wanted to get away from the world of music but he did not do it. While his wife left the singing unhappy with the son's death, Jagjit Singh was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the year 2003 by the Government of India.
In 2011, Jagjit Singh was to perform with Ghulam Ali in the UK but due to cerebral hemorrhage he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on September 23, 2011. His condition deteriorated and he went to coma. Jagjit Singh died on October 10, 2011
